Oily skin gets the worst advice: scrub harder, dry it out, skip the moisturizer. All of it backfires. Strip oily skin and it produces more oil to compensate. The right products balance oil instead of fighting it. Press play for our estheticians' favorites, then keep scrolling for what each one does and why it earns a spot on the shelf.
1. A gel cleanser that cleans without stripping
Start with a gel or foaming cleanser that removes excess oil and leaves your skin comfortable, not tight. If your face squeaks after washing, the cleanser is too harsh, and your skin will spend the rest of the day overcorrecting.
2. A niacinamide serum
Niacinamide is the hardest working ingredient for oily skin. It helps regulate oil production, refines the look of pores, calms redness, and plays well with everything else in your routine. Morning or night, it earns its spot.
3. A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer
Yes, oily skin needs moisturizer. Dehydrated oily skin produces even more oil. A gel or lotion texture with hyaluronic acid gives your skin the water it needs without the weight it does not.
4. A clay mask, once or twice a week
Clay and charcoal draw out excess oil and congestion without the damage of scrubbing. Keep it to once or twice a week, and follow with your moisturizer. Daily masking is how oily skin ends up dehydrated and angry.
5. A salicylic acid exfoliant
Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can get inside the pore and clear it out. Two to three nights a week is plenty for most skin. If you are also treating acne, ask your esthetician how to layer it safely.
6. An SPF that will not clog
Skipping sunscreen because it feels greasy is the most common oily skin mistake we see. Lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas exist and they are worth finding. Sun damage thickens skin and makes congestion worse, so SPF is oil control too.
7. Blotting papers over powder
Midday shine? Blot, do not pile on powder. Blotting papers lift the oil without disturbing your SPF or makeup, and without adding layers that can settle into pores by the afternoon.
What to skip
Harsh scrubs, alcohol-heavy toners, and anything that promises to "dry out" your skin. Oily skin is not a problem to eliminate. It is a skin type to work with, and stripped skin always fights back.
