Great waxing results are half technique and half care, and the care starts before you ever get on the table. A little prep makes your wax more comfortable and your results cleaner, and good aftercare keeps skin calm and bump-free. Here is the full before and after for your waxing appointment.
Before your wax
- Let hair grow to about a quarter inch, roughly two to three weeks of growth. Too short and there is nothing to grab, too long can be messier.
- Exfoliate gently a day or two before to lift dead skin and free trapped hairs, so the wax grabs hair instead of buildup.
- Skip lotion, oil, and makeup on the area the day of, so the wax can adhere cleanly.
- Avoid retinoids and strong acids on the area for a few days before, since they thin the skin's surface and can make waxing too harsh. If you use prescription retinoids, tell your specialist.
- Stay out of the sun and skip tanning right before. We do not wax sunburned skin.
- Time it kindly. Skin can be more sensitive in the days right before your period, so schedule for comfort if you can.
The first 24 to 48 hours after
Your skin and follicles are open and a little sensitive right after, so give them a quiet window.
- Avoid heat: no hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs.
- Avoid sweat: skip the gym and intense workouts for a day.
- Avoid sun and tanning, including spray tan, until skin settles.
- Avoid friction: wear loose, breathable clothing over freshly waxed areas.
- Skip active products on the area (retinol, acids, strong exfoliants, fragrance) for a couple of days.
What is normal
A little redness, warmth, or small bumps right after are completely normal and usually fade within a few hours to a day. If anything lasts longer, give us a call.
Preventing ingrown hairs
- Start gentle exfoliation about 48 hours after your wax, two to three times a week.
- Keep the area hydrated with a light, non-clogging moisturizer.
- Do not pick at bumps or trapped hairs, which can irritate the follicle.
Keeping results longer
Wax on a regular cycle, usually every three to four weeks, so hair grows back finer and waxing gets easier each time. Letting hair reach about a quarter inch before your next visit keeps every wax clean and effective.
