Sugaring vs. Waxing – The Pros, Cons Of The DIY Skin Care

There’s some debate happening in the beauty industry, and it’s all centered around sugaring vs. waxing for the best hair removal results. If you’ve been curious about the difference between the two, keep reading and pull out a pen and paper!

All the deets about waxing

Waxing involves using warm wax and a waxing strip to remove the hair in the opposite direction of the follicle’s growth pattern.

Pros• Tends to yield smoother results• Best for thicker hair• Works on all skin types

Con• Typically reported to be more painful*

*We’d like to note that pain is subjective – it varies from person to person depending on their tolerance level. The type of wax used also plays a huge role here. At Lemon + Honey, we use a high-quality wax that attaches only to the hair – NOT the skin – to deliver a waxing experience that’s virtually painless!

Okay, well what about sugaring?

Sugaring is an all-natural technique that involved lemon juice, sugar (of course), water, and glycerin to remove the hair in the natural direction of the follicle’s growth pattern.

Pros• Typically less painful than waxing• Great for sensitive skin • Better for finer hair or for people who have heat sensitivities (sugaring mixture can be room temperate, whereas wax has to be warm to achieve ideal results)

Con• Tends to be more expensive than waxing

Tips for getting the look at home…

Whether you opt for waxing or sugaring, here are some tips to keep in mind if you decide to DIY:• Exfoliate the skin a day or two before to remove any dry or dead skin cells for easier hair removal.• Trim the hair first if necessary. Hair should be between 1/4″ – 1/2” long.• Start with a small area to make sure you feel comfortable doing it yourself, and then work your way up to waxing/sugaring larger areas.

Our thoughts? We think it all boils down to preference, what makes you feel the most comfortable (and beautiful), and your skin type. Both techniques are used to achieve the same result –remove hair – and they’re both more effective at removing hair from the root than traditional shaving!
