There are a ton of different skincare products on the market these days. New information becomes available in the beauty world regularly and new ingredients pop up daily! But no matter how much new information we get our hands on, one thing remains the same – YOUR SKIN NEEDS SUNSCREEN – no matter your skin type or tone.
Have you ever heard this saying? “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. We think it applies perfectly to sunscreen and is one thing we can all agree on.
Daily use of a quality sunscreen goes a long way! You probably know the most common one – sunscreen prevents sunburn. And while that is 100% true, there are some other amazing benefits! Here’s why wearing sunscreen every day is so important for your skin:
Reduces risk of developing certain skin cancers
When our skin is exposed to the sun for long periods of time, we run the risk of developing certain skin cancers. According to the Worldwide Cancer Research Organization, over 80% of skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation.
Sunscreen blocks UV rays so they aren’t absorbed by your skin. It probably goes without saying, but this is a pretty important reason to wear sunscreen and we put it first for a reason!
Prevents premature aging
Aging is a natural part of life, but that doesn’t mean your skin has to do it so quickly! If you want to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful, then sunscreen should be your best friend. When we don’t wear sunscreen, our skin begins to show early signs of aging – like fine lines and wrinkles.
Elastin and collagen are the two proteins in our bodies that are responsible for our skin’s strength and appearance. While it’s normal for our bodies to produce less of these as we age, overexposure to UV rays diminishes elastin and collagen more quickly – making the skin appear older.
Reduces chances of hyperpigmentation
Our first two tips related back to overexposure to UV rays – and this last tip is no exception. One skin condition that is often caused by excess sun exposure is hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is a condition that causes the skin to appear darker than other parts of the skin, causing an uneven skin tone. Wearing sunscreen creates a protective layer between your skin and the sun to prevent this from happening.
It’s also worth noting that sunscreen should be worn even on gloomy days or days when you’re mainly indoors. Sun rays are strong and can penetrate clouds and windows, even if you can’t see it.
Finally, it’s not enough to apply sunscreen just once. For maximum protection, it’s best to apply sunscreen every 2 hours – especially on those days when you’re out and about.
